![]() ![]() ![]() The actual NeXT technology wasn't any better than Be's (some would argue much worse). Gassee wanted too much for Be, and Jobs was much more desirable than Gassee to bring on board. I'm pretty sure there were two reasons Apple went with NeXT over BeOS: money and Jobs. In fact, in its day it was the most UNIX-like of the desktop OSes and more popular than NeXTstep. ![]() BeOS was released software (not beta), it had applications, it was largely POSIX compliant, and the lack of extensive applications appeared to largely be a market share issue. It then began talks with Be over acquiring its BeOS, but the operating system was only in early beta developer release and had no application base, in part because it wasn't built on an open Unix foundation.įrom everything I've read, this sentence is almost completely untrue.
